Library of Congress, Washington, DC
Project Contact:
Billy Hoppis, Assistant Directory of
Operations
Project Description:
The Library’s
Information Technology Services (ITS) department provides and
supports a wide range of computer and telecommunications resources
to the LOC community of over 5000 customers at LOC.
ITS operates the LOC Data Center, and Alternate Computing
Facility (ACF), the National Library Services for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped (NLS/BPH) facility, the National Audio-Visual
Conservation Center (NAVCC) facility, the ITS Help Desk and Hot
Line, the ITS Interoperability Lab, provides telecommunications
infrastructure, provides workstation software configuration
management, LAN system administration and support, data networking
support; servers as central system analysis, design and programming
resource for IT projects; conducts research in emerging
technologies; provides consultation and collaboration in the design
and implementation of specialized computer systems for library
applications.
The LOC is in the process of optimizing its
core technologies to increase efficiency, reliability, and integrity
of technical architecture.
This allows continued improvement in the Library’s capacity
to manage and deliver digital content and business applications at
the Library’s data centers.
Vcentra was selected to assist in supporting
the ITS Technical Architecture Program.
The core of the program is the Technical Architecture review
process, which identifies the current infrastructure and provides a
road map for next generation technologies and services to support
the existing and future state of the technical infrastructure.
Vcentra will work directly with ITS to enhance the effective
deployment, optimization, and standardization of the designated core
technology components, within the context of strengthening network,
hardware, and telecom services.

"The main purpose of our
growing presence online is to provide through new
technology high-quality content that can stimulate
people everywhere to form their own questions that will
motivate them to seek out answers themselves in the
stored wisdom of books."
